Through stories that connect different areas of the city, a hybrid narrator voice emerges as an ecological subjectivity produced by and through sensing, at once abstract and embodied into different physical forms and temporal perspectives. Each narrative moment provides a glimpse into the complex layers of time and space, offering perspectives that transcend traditional boundaries between nature, technology, and the urban environment. The essay film alludes to the now-extinct genre of the city symphony, while the Super8 film format creates a dreamlike temporal ambivalence reminiscent of travel films and nature documentaries. The image frames appear as fragile envelopes themselves. The photographs and films that Tillema produced or collected during his time in colonial Indonesia are located in the archives of the Museum voor Volkenkunde, the Tropenmuseum and the Eye filmmuseum. Historians and anthropologists have often regarded Tillema’s work and legacy as unavoidable primary sources, often detached from the context of his life, his main business and ideology. With the six waves of cholera bacterium outbreaks in the background, in Semarang, he built the first purified and bottled water factory in the Dutch East Indies. This enterprise directly supported his expeditions, observations and publications. Tillema wrote numerous publications on hygiene and urbanism in the colony. as a single-channel documentary, The Forest Underneath combines materials shot on location in and around the Hambach Forest into an observational film. The last remnant of an ecosystem that has occupied the Rhine plain since the end of the last ice age – and a site where corporate exploitation, environmental activism, and environmental degradation coexist –&nbsp; the forest borders the largest open-pit coal mine in Europe, and ghost towns doomed to be torn down. Planned to be cleared to mine by the energy company RWE, the forest has been a political standpoint for environmentalists since 2012, when a diverse group of activists took permanent residence within it, in self-built ‘barrios’ and treehouses, behind barricades, to protect it from planned destruction. The meandering camera captures their environents, surroundings and moments of their everyday. The Forest Underneath was originally produced as a contribution to a visual investigation of the landscape of the Meuse–Rhine Euroregion, curated by Bas Princen at the Jan van Eyck Academie. <img Shore Leaves offers an entry point to the everyday world of seafarers, portraing those moments when the pace of logistical handling slows down. Shore leave stands for time off-work, that can be spent ashore: these moments are vital for the health and wellbeing of seafarers and they represent the short hours when sailors can connect with their families and friends. The video documentation was produced during fieldwork aboard bulk carrier and container cargo ships harbored for loading and unloading in the ports of Venice and Rotterdam, and at the seafarers organizations that in both cities provide practical assistance and support to seafarers of all nationalities. Focusing on the spaces and gestures of this waiting time, the project confronts a reality that is generally concealed. The machinic efficiency in the circulation of the goods on which our economies are highly dependent has a counterpart: while human presence and labor are still indispensable and of infrastructural they are rigorous and mathematical, other times loose and under-defined. here, they lend themselves to be represented visually, and through staged choreographies. friction atlas is an ongoing critical archive, where laws regulating behaviours and gatherings in public spaces, sampled from different contexts, are represented and collected. addressing the issue of legibility of public space, it aims to make regulations explicit, through graphical devices. by drawing 1:1 diagrams, enacting laws on public surfaces, the project makes legal prescriptions and loopholes debatable. through the engagement of the public, the dynamics of authority become also physically discernible. the diagrams represent cases from different cities, including athens, genoa, cairo, washington, stockholm, sydney, new york, and rome. we invite the public to participate in a choreographed debate, in a rereading of urban space, which will highlight some of its hidden aspects. <img width="2500" multiple, visual ethnographies, and&nbsp; sites in which life and death intertwine with multispecies formations, soil and landscape forms. Duck decoys are tightly orchestrated spaces consisting of a large pond ending in several funnel traps, surrounded by reed screens and trees; they are catching mechanisms deployed from the fifteenth century onwards to trap wild ducks through a multi-species process.&nbsp;Across the Netherlands, they have become naturalised ruins, as mallard ducks have moved to urbanised areas. For its first-ever appearance, artists Ilke Gers and Diego Virgen Castro were been invited to perform in tandem. Nixtamalization is a process for the preparation of maize, common in Mexican pre-hispanic cuisine, in which the corn is soaked and cooked in an alkaline solution. It’s mixed with water and chalk, the same used in construction and to mark playing fields. The traces were displayed at When Site Lost the Plot (Amsterdam). For its second appearance, artists Uta Eisenreich and Aslı Hatipoğlu have exchanged thoughts on exposure, transience and photochemistry as veiling and unveiling processes. On the vibrant surfaces of films and ferments, time imprints textures, representations of itself. It traces the effects of light and warmth, of the passage of chemical gradients, and symbiotic life forms. Some colours fade overnight, while others linger for longer. The show looks into the image as something wrinkly, tasty, smelly, and chewy. The traces were displayed at fanfare (Amsterdam).
